SALSC Bowling Competition - Ladies 50 & Over
26 July 2010

The SALSC Ladies 50 and over bowling payoffs were held at Planefield Bowling Club on Thursday 22 July.

In contrast to the Gents playoffs last week, the ladies had a wonderfully warm, calm and sunny day. The five teams competing enjoyed the day enormously. The winning team will represent IASC at the SALSC finals in Paisley in August.

The eventual winners this year are the ladies from Fraser Park Bowling Club. We wish them well when they travel to Paisley for the finals.

A vote of thanks was given to the ladies who organised the competition and refreshments, and a thank you to Bob Henderson for acting as umpire.

Winning team members are:

Lead Christine Kirkpatrick, 2 Dorothy Birnie 3 Nancy Forbes and Skip Jean Follen

SALSC Bowling Competition - Gents 50 & Over
26 July 2010

The SALSC Gents 50 and Over play offs were held on Thursday 15 July at Highland Bowling Club.

The weather was dreadful, half the green was flooded, but six teams played happily all day to produce a winner to represent IASC at the SALSC finals in Strathaven in August.

The winners this year are the gents from Planefield Bowling Club. Worthy winners, but it was a close run thing going right up to the last game with all to play for.

The host club organised a very good day, and the backroom team of ladies provided very tasty refreshments. The winning team leader thanked them all for their hard work and a very enjoyable day.

Winning team members are (left to right):

W Farquhar, J Horne, J Mutch and B Henderson (Skip)

Inverness Mountain Bikers Title Success
23 June 2010

The 4th round of the Scottish Cross Country Mountain Bike race series and Scottish Championships took place on Sunday at Anoch Mor, near Fort William. A local venue for highland riders and notoriously difficult terrain, this course was by far the most technically demanding round of the series yet. Despite the rainy forecast riders assembled from all over the country hoping to claim the title of Scottish Champion in their category. Many arrived and decided not to race after their practise lap such was the difficulty of the rocky descents through the trees.
The weather was not as bad a forecast but the steep course did become quite treacherous in places and claimed a few injuries before the day was out.
Kirkhill’s Lee Craigie, comfortably defended her Scottish Championship title from 2009, retaining the status for another year.
The female Veteran’s title was won with ease by Inverness rider Ann Murray.
Kinmylies’ Yuka Gallagher rode well to win over her nemesis from the borders and claim the Scottish Youth Champion title while her older brother and world cup rider, Kenta had to settle for second in the junior male race.
In the highly competitive Youth category highland team Square Wheels riders claimed 6th, 7th and 9th positions but the most successful member of the team, Iain Paton, rode a fantastic race only narrowly missing out on 1st position and Scottish Youth Champion title.
In the Grand Veteran race, Inverness Billy Matthews had some competition but managed to control most of the field to claim 2nd place.
A return to racing saw David McDonald (a former elite level rider for Square Wheels) finishing in 3rd place in the male Master’s category.
And finally, Sam Lawton continued to show promise by another comfortable win in the Male Beginners race.
The next round takes place in Perth on 8th August. See www.sxc.org.uk for full result and photos.

777 Mountain Bike Club Success
14 June 2010

The 3rd round of the Scottish Cross Country Mountain Bike race series took place last Sunday (30/05/10) in the uncharacteristically hot and sunny Trossachs, near Glasgow. Many highland riders made the journey from overcast skies in the north to the hot, humid conditions in the central belt to continue their series bid.

The course was a return to old school cross country racing meaning the climbs went straight up and the descents, straight down both of which over loose rocky surfaces and slippery tree roots. This type of course favoured riders with good strength and bike handling skills, qualities long associated with riders from the north of Scotland.
And, despite thundery weather which visited briefly making the course slippery as well as steep, Highland riders did not fail to deliver.
In the female categories – Kirkhill’s Lee Craigie, now recovered from her World Cup bid in the south, comfortably won the 4 lap elite women’s race. The female Grand Veteran’s race was won by Fiona Paton riding for Square Wheels.
In the male races, the highly competitive Youth category saw Square Wheels riders claim 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th positions with Tom Evans, Iain Paton, Finn Munro – Gear and Micheal Taylor placed respectively and making their team very proud.
There was another Square Wheels inter club battle going on between Inverness based riders Gregor Grant and Billy Matthews in the Grand Veteran race. Gregor pulled away however to claim a convincing win over second place Matthews.
Liam McLaughlin finished an impressive 3rd on the Juvenile category and in the Beginners race, Sam Lawton showed promise by finishing in 2nd place.
The next race of the season is the Scottish Championship being held at Anoch Mor, Fort William on the 13th June. See www.sxc.org.uk for more details.
